Oprah Winfrey Putting Huge Smiles On The Young Black Men Of Morehouse
Promising to pay off student loan debt of the 2019 Morehouse graduates in May of this year, billionaire Robert Smith made good on his promise and donated $34 million to the school last month.
On the heels of that outstanding gesture, billionaire media tycoon Oprah Winfrey has donated an additional $13 million on Monday.
As stated on the Morehouse website, Winfrey’s history of giving in support of Morehouse students began in 1989 with a $1 million contribution made during commencement exercises that established the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholarship Fund. Each subsequent gift has been added to the corpus of the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholarship Fund. Her total contributions have set Ms. Winfrey apart as the College’s top individual donor to date.
After visiting the all men’s historically black college for the 30th anniversary of the OWSP, Winfrey made the announcement. With a balance today of $12 million, Winfrey’s surprise new donation of $13 million makes a total donation of $25 million.
As reported by CNN, approximately 600 scholars who benefited from the Program include Birmingham, Alabama mayor Randall Woodfin. Elected in 2017 at the age of 36, Woodfin is the city’s youngest mayor to ever be elected in more than a hundred years.
Another beneficiary of the OWSP is Nathan Rolle, a senior whose major is international studies; he is minoring in journalism. Meeting Oprah on Monday, Nathan Rolle, a current Oprah scholar had this to say about Ms. Winfrey –
“I’ve looked up to Mrs. Winfrey my entire life…this day is the highlight of my Morehouse experience.”
Winfrey Has The Largest Endowment Ever At Morehouse College
According to a news release by the school, Winfrey now has the largest endowment ever at Morehouse College. Before making her announcement to the outstanding young men of Morehouse, she stated –
“Seeing you young Oprah Winfrey scholars here today has moved me deeply. “I am so proud of you, I’m proud of everybody in attendance at this school who is seeking to know more clearly who you are, the value you hold and how you will share that value with the rest of the world.”
Adding to Winfrey’s message, Morehouse President David A. Thomas made this statement –
“I’m grateful to Oprah Winfrey for her generosity, I am also feeling hopeful for Morehouse and what it has garnered in terms of philanthropic support with gifts like Oprah’s and Robert Smith’s.
I am hopeful that this will also get others to step up with their support of Morehouse, but even more broadly, historically black colleges and universities.”
