Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx star in Just Mercy. After having it’s world premiere on September 6th at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), this project will soon be at a theatre near you.
Michael B. Jordan Also Produced This Project
Based on a memoir written by attorney Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy is a legal drama based on a true story of the beginnings of the Equal Justice Initiative (started by Stevenson) and the clients that were helped.
Dedicated to defending the poor, the incarcerated, and the wrongly condemned, Stevenson led a small staff in Montgomery Alabama at a time when the nation was facing the highest rates of death sentencing and execution rates.
Walter McMillian was one of his first clients.
As portrayed in the film, Walter McMillian is a black man wrongly imprisoned and sentenced to die for the murder of a white woman. With the aid of defense attorney, Bryan Stevenson, McMillian appeals his murder conviction.
With this project, we see how Stevenson, a young lawyer in his early days, started the Equal Justice Initiative.
As explained on their website, justmercy.eji.org, Just Mercy takes us inside America’s broken criminal justice system and compels us to confront inequality and injustice.
