ANTM Has Been A Launching Pad For Many Of Today’s Most Successful Careers
Tyra Banks, the creator of America’s Next Top Model has launched many a career. Of all the women, and later men that pranced across her runway, these are the most successful black ladies.
#1 – FATIMA SIAD – $16 MILLION
Somali-American fashion model, Fatima Siad was born in Mogadishu, Somalia and later raised in Boston, Massachusetts. She appeared on ANTM Cycle 10. Though she did not win ANTM, at 33 years old, she has had a lot of success due to her exposure on the show.
At 7 years old, Fatima went through female genital cutting, which is customary in her country. After her two sisters were killed by the Somali army during the Civil War, her mother fled to the United States for safety. She was 13 years old.
Since appearing on ANTM, Fatima has walked many runways, appeared on numerous magazine covers and has been featured in lots of editorials.
Today, Siad is worth $16 million dollars. She uses her voice to educate others about the horrendous practice of female genital circumcision for young girls. Speaking openly on that subject, she wrote an autobiographical essay for Orato.com titled Vulnerable Beauty: Finding My Voice.
#2 – EVA MARCILLE – $4 Million
Perhaps the most recognizable on this list, Eva Marcille won Cycle 3 of ANTM at the age of 19. Born Eva Pigford in Los Angeles California, she attended Clark Atlanta University.
Upon winning Cycle 3, Eva stated –
“This is so unreal. Oh my God, beautiful? A Model? Me?”
“Oh my God, I’m a Cover Girl! This little tomboy from L.A., that has never been beautiful. I was not the cute girl in school. I came here, the shortest…the one that had the most insecurities inside of them. Now, I’m America’s Next Top Model. And I get to represent all those little girls that feel the way I feel.”
“Watch out world, here come’s Eva!”
At 35 years old, Eva has been very successful. Gracing many covers and editorials for all the top magazines. Marcille represents LA Models. She is also an actress and television personality. She has appeared in many music videos and can currently be seen on reality show Housewives of Atlanta.
Launching her acting career, Eva changed her name from Pigford to Marcille. She appeared on Smallville, Born Again Virgin, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, The Game, Everybody Hates Chris and The Young and the Restless, to name a few. She also hosted her own television show, Hair Battle Spectacular. Also in film, Eva has starred in Crossover, The Walk and I Think I Love My Wife.
Eva is married to Atlanta based attorney, Michael Todd. Together they share 2 sons, Mike Jr. and Maverick. She also has a daughter, Marley Rae, from a previous relationship. Marcille is has a net worth of about $4 million dollars.
#3 – WINNIE HARLOW – $3 MILLION
Born Chantelle Whitney Brown-Young of Jamaican ancestry in Canada, 25 year old Winnie Harlow is a model. Additionally, she is an activist and spokesperson for the skin condition, vitiligo. Diagnosed with the condition at the age of 4, she was bullied in school and once contemplated suicide.
Harlow was discovered via Instagram by ANTM host and creator, Tyra Banks. She was a contestant on Cycle 2. After being eliminated in the second week, Winnie returned when she received the most votes in a comeback competition. Ultimately she made it to 6th place.
Since leaving ANTM, the only Canadian to be cast on the reality show, she walked the runway for several fashion designers. And also appeared in many magazine editorials. Additionally, she did a commercial for Sprite, did a campaign for Swarovski and modeled for Victoria’s Secret.
Some of the music videos Harlow appeared in was for Eminem, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas and others.
At 25 years old, Winnie Harlow is worth an estimated $3 million.
#4 – TOCCARA JONES – $1.5 MILLION
38 year old Toccara Jones was bron in Dayton, Ohio. She is a fashion model, television personality and ocassional singer and actress.
Toccara was a contestant on ANTM for Cycle 3 and placed 7th. During her tenure, she won “Cover Girl Of The Week” 4 consecutive times.
Jones has modeled for Ashley Stewart, Avon, Torrid, New York and Company and Target. She also did editorials for Essence Magazine, Vibe Magazine and Smooth Magazine. Additionally, she was selected for the Rocawear “I Will Not Lose” campaign.
Dabbling in acting, she made an appearance in Trina’s music video for the song “I Got A Thang For You“. She also participated in a 2009 national tour of The Vagina Monologues with an all-black cast, and participated in the movie, Think Like A Man.
For television, she starred in the second season of The Ultimate Merger, among other roles. Also, released a workout DVD called Toccara’s Fabulous Work-Out for Real Size Women.
Jones represents Wilhelmina Models as a plus-size model and has a net worth of approximately $1.5 million dollars.
#5 – YAYA DECOSTA – $1 MILLION
Model and Actress Yaya DeCosta was born Camara DeCosta Johnson in Harlem, New York. She is of Brazilian and African-American descent. Earning her bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies and International Relations at Brown University, she appeared on Cycle 3 of ANTM. At 37 years old, she has lots of success in her career.
Yaya found herself in the bottom 2 of the competition only 1 time. Since landing in 2nd place on Cycle 3 of ANTM, Yaya has starred in several projects, including All My Children, Ugly Betty and Chicago Med. Portraying superstar singer Whitney Houston for Lifetime television film, Whitney, Yaya received raise for her performance. She also did Broadway.
Among her many advertising appearances , she did campaigns for Garnier Fructis, Oil of Olay, Radioshack, Sephora and Dr. Scholl’s. She has graced the covers of numerous magazines, and did acting work, including Eve on television, and Take The Lead and The Butler on the big screen.
In addition to English, she can speak Portuguese, French, Spanish, and conversational Japanese. DeCosta has one son, Sankara.
