Kenneth Chamberlan, Sr., A Black Mentally-Ill, Ex-Marine Triggers His LifeAid Medical Alert Button While Sleeping At 5:22 a.m….By 7:00 a.m. He Was Dead
Based on a true story. The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain explores the events that led to the death of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr., an elderly African American veteran with bipolar disorder and heart problems. Chamberlain was killed during a conflict with police officers who were dispatched to check on him.
O.K., let’s say you are 68-year old elderly black man in America. Bi-polar, ex-marine, heart problems, war vet…and you just wanna get some sleep.
Imagine that while sleeping, you remove the LifeAlert necklace you are wearing to place on the bedside table. Inadvertently you press the alert button…but you don’t know that.
Then imagine, that in you sleepy fog, LifeAlert tries to contact you to see if you need assistance. Several messages are on your answering machine…but you you don’t know that.
Again, imagine that police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians have all been dispatched to your home. Presumably to do a welfare check…but you don’t know that, either.
Now, you are awakened out of your sleep, to find loud banging and demands for you to open the front door. Even after you tell them that you did not call them and did not need assistance, they still keep banging and screaming at you to open the door.
While they are getting more forceful in their attempt to break down the door, you call LifeAlert, informing them that you think those at the door are going to come in and kill you.
After a whole hour of banging to break down the door and screaming at you, even calling you a ‘Nigger,’ at one point, these unknown people eventually make their way into your apartment. At what point did you deserve to die?
Why Do These Events Keep Happening? And When Will It End?
In 2012, a grand jury reviewed the case and decided that no criminal charge would be made against police officers involved in the killing. Imagine That!
