Where are they now? – Life after Martin. Just what is going on with all those folks from the beloved sitcom, Martin, that made us laugh for years.

The Beloved Cast of ‘Martin’

Though the last episode of one of our favorite sitcoms aired back on May 1, 1997, it is still as strong as ever. Still watching this show after all these years. Fans of ‘Martin’ can’t get enough, and it’s still popular on the small screen.

Every once in a while, I actually catch a show that I have never seen before. And I thought I had seen them all. So, just what did these popular actors do after the show went off the air? And where are they now?

MARTIN LAWRENCE

The multi-talented Martin Lawrence, played the title character, Martin Payne, a radio show host. Remarkably, Lawrence also played the part of Sheneneh Jenkins, Edna “Mama” Payne, Ol’ Otis, Jerome, Roscoe, Dragonfly Jones, Bob, Elroy Preston and King Beef.

Since Leaving Martin –

  • After the enormous success of ‘Martin’, Lawrence has continued to do stand-up comedy, acting, producing and writing.
  • He’s also been a talk show host
  • On the small screen, Martin appeared in and was Executive Producer for tv series, Love That Girl!, and also appeared in The Soul Man and Partners
  • Stretching his acting abilities to the big screen, Lawrence appeared in many blockbuster films alongside the likes of Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, John Travolta, Danny DeVito and others
  • Some of his work include Life, Blue Streak, Bad Boys II, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and Death At A Funeral, to name a few
  • Martin appeared in several movies, in which he also was the Executive Producer. These include, 3 installments in the Big Momma’s House series. Also, What’s The Worst That Could Happen, Black Knight, National Security, Rebound
  • Still doing stand-up, he moved his show to the big screen in Martin Lawrence Live – Runteldat and Martin Lawrence – Doin’ Time
  • Martin also released 2 comedy C.D.’s

While nominated many times, among his awards are NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 1995 and 1996, both for ‘Martin‘. Also, Lawrence received a BET Comedy Award in 2005.

Martin Lawrence is 54 years old, and can be seen in upcoming film, the 3rd installment in the Bad Boys franchise, Bad Boys For Life with actor Will Smith.

TISHA MARTIN-CAMPBELL

Tisha Campbell Martin

Tisha Martin-Campbell played Regina “Gina” Waters-Payne and was the girlfriend of lead character, Martin Payne. Gina was a professional and worked at a public relations firm.

Since Leaving Martin –

  • Tisha has done several movies for the big screen, including Sprung and Down To Earth
  • For television, Tisha was on hit sitcom, My Wife and Kids with Damon Wayans from 2001 – 2005
  • Also for t.v., she’s appeared on All of Us, Everybody Hates Chris, the Real Husbands of Hollywood, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Grey’s Anatomy and Empire, to name a few
  • Putting out several muscial projects, she also released single, All Cried Out in 2014.
  • Nominated for many awards, she won an Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Jay Kyle on My Wife and Kids.

Tisha has been in the news a lot lately, due to her highly publicized divorce from her husband of 22 years, actor Duane Martin. The share 2 sons. Additionally, Tisha appeared on talk show The Real, and was recently reunited with her long lost sister.

TICHINA ARNOLD

Tichina Arnold played Pamela “Pam” James and was the nemesis of Martin Payne, and best friend. Additionally, Pam was the assistant of Gina at a public relations firm. Many times, Tichina Arnold has shared her beautiful singing voice on the show.

Since Leaving Martin –

  • In 1998, Tichina started her own business, selling bejeweled headgear called China Moon Rags., which were Sworovski crystal-embroidered bandanas.
  • For the big screen, Tichina appeared in Scenes From A Mall, Big Momma’s House, Royal Family Thanksgiving and Royal Family Christmas, to name a few.
  • Tichina starred as Lena Baker, in Hope & Redemption: The Lena Baker Story in 2008.
  • In television, some of Tichina’s appearances were on The Jamie Foxx Show, Soul Food, The Boondocks (voice) and Wife Swap.
  • Tichina also had starring roles in Everybody Hates Chris and Happily Divorced and Survivor’s Remorse, among other shows.
  • Upcoming projects for Tichina include The Main Event, which is in post-production, and Runt slated for a 2020 release.

Tichina has one daughter, Alijah Kay Haggins, born in 2004 with music producer, Carvin Haggins. In 2013, along with her sister Zenay who has lupus, Tichina Arnold started The We Win Foundation for people with lupus.

Among her many nominations, Tichina Arnold won an Image Award in 1996 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Martin. She also won a Teen Choice Award and an Image Award for her performance in Everybody Hates Chris in 2006.

At 50 years old, Tichina is still going strong, and can be seen on CBS in The Neighborhood as Tina Butler.

THOMAS MIKAL-FORD

Thomas Mikal-Ford played Thomas ‘Tommy” Strawn, one of Martin Payne’s 2 best friends. Famously, he was the friend who “ain’t got no job”. Though he always had money and nice things. Mikal-Ford is the only character to appear in every episode. He also is the only character to never play an alternate character.

Since Leaving Martin –

  • Starring in a host of plays, Thomas also stretched his talents by directing and producing
  • In 1993 he co-hosted the Texas Gospel Music Awards
  • Writing inspirational books for children, Thomas put out Positive Attitude and I Am Responsible for Me. He also directed a documentary on bullying titled Through My Lens Atl, whiched aired on Aspire TV
  • For t.v. and films, Mikal-Ford had major roles in Harlem Nights, Nasty Boys, A Different World, Class Act, Living Single, New York Undercover, The Parkers and many more.

Sadly, Thomas Mikal-Ford died on October 12, 2016 at a hospital in the Atlanta area at the age of 52. This very talented brother left us with a lot of material to remember him by.

CARL ANTHONY PAYNE II

Carl Anthony Payne II played the part of Cole Brown, Martin’s other best friend who was dimwitted and lived with his mother.

Since Leaving Martin

  • Payne appeared on the small screen, on The Hughleys, George Lopez, Girlfriends, The Rickey Smiley Show, and The Game, to name a few
  • Starring in For Richer of For Poorer, Payne was able to work with Rockmond Dunbar and LeToya Luckett
  • Stretching his talents, he directed and produced music videos, web series and short films
  • Also a comedian, Carl Anthony Payne toured the country with his stand-up
  • Payne also appeared in several music videos, for Whodini, Mint Condition and Bobby Brown

Now 50 years old, as a stand-up comedian, Payne continues to travel the country making us laugh at his comedy shows.

GARRETT MORRIS

Garrett Morris was Martin’s boss at the radio station name Stan Winters. He was the owner and founder of radio station WZUP.

Since Leaving Martin

  • Garrett Morris, with his extensive acting career before Martin, jumped right back in the action his stint with Martin ended in 1995
  • For television, he starred in Wayans Brothers, The Jamie Foxx Show, Boston Common, City of Angels, The Hughleys and All Of Us
  • Also for television, he appeared in Family Guy, MacGyver, Shameless, 2 Broke Girls, This is Us and Scandal
  • Morris also did a television film, Little Richard
  • For the big screen, Garrett appeared in Black Scorpion and Black Scorpion II and dozens of other films
  • Adding his talents to commercials, he appeared in ads that include Nintendo and Miller Lite

Today, Garrett is 82 years old and can be seen in upcoming project with actress Octavia Spencer about the life of Madam C. J. Walker

REGINALD BALLARD

Reginald Ballard played Brother Man, pronounce Bruh-Man, and was the upstairs neighbor of Martin and Gina that always came to their apartment via a window. He lived on the “5th flo”, though he always put up 4 fingers when relaying this fact.

Since Leaving Martin

  • Ballard is an actor and comedian
  • Reginald appeared in a music video with Ty Dolla Sign, Big Sean and Chris Brown
  • For television, Reginald Ballard appeared in Caroline in The City, Malcolm and Eddie, E.R. and The Parkers
  • Also for the small screen, he appeared in NCIS, Veronica Mars, The Bernie Mac Show All of Us , Weeds and Bones, to name a few
  • You can catch him in upcoming project, 86 Zombies to be released in 2020

At 54 years old, Ballard resides in Pasadena, California with his wife and 2 kids. He continues to act and do stand up comedy.

JERI GRAY

April 6, 1925 – August 8, 1997

Ms. Geri, portrayed by Jeri Gray was a demure, but sassy senior citizen who was also up for ‘whooping some ass’, namely Martin’s.

Since Leaving Martin

  • After leaving Martin, Jeri Gray appeared in Sprung in 1997 as the Dancing Older Lady

At the age of 72, Ms. Gray, whose real name was Jeruth Persson, departed this life on August 8, 1997. She died of a heart attack in Los Angeles California, shortly after the Martin series ended. Her comedy work will continue to be enjoyed by all for years to come.

We Can Still Catch Up With Martin and The Crew In Syndication

Running for 5 seasons from 1992 to 1997, Martin is still a favorite sitcom. Of this loving ensemble, many are still in the news today.

Distributed by Warner Brothers Televison, we can still catch up with ‘Martin’ and the crew in syndication on BET, and as of 2018 on VH-1.
