After choosing Spike Lee for president, the festival released the reason he was chosen –

”Lee’s perspective is more valuable than ever. Cannes is a natural homeland and a global sounding board for those who (re)awaken minds and question our stances and fixed ideas.”

Upon hearing the news, Lee was truly honored, stating –

“When I got the call … I was shocked, happy, surprised and proud all at the same time.”

No stranger to having his projects screened there in the past, this is a big milestone in Spike’s career. As of matter of fact, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing was nominated in 1989 for the Palme d’Or. Which happens to be the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.

BlacKkKlansman was the big winner of the Palme d’Or in 2018. And Lee also won next highest possible award for this project, the Grand Prix.

Lee Calls The Cannes Film Festival “Most Important Film Festival In The World”

As reported by Page Six, Lee stated that Cannes was the most important film festival in the world and expressed his honor at being chosen –

“I’m honoured to be the first person of the African diaspora (USA) to be named president of the Cannes jury and of a main film festival.”

“To me, the Cannes film festival (besides being the most important film festival in the world – no disrespect to anybody) has had a great impact on my film career. You could easily say Cannes changed the trajectory of who I became in world cinema.” – Spike Lee

Congrats Spike Lee!

The 73rd Annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place between Tuesday, May 12th and Saturday, May 23rd in Cannes, France.
