Michelle Obama wins first Grammy for the audiobook version of her best-selling memoir “Becoming“. Other nominees included the Beastie Boys, John Waters and others.
Michelle Obama Becomes A Grammy Winner For Audio Version Of Her Memoir

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has plenty to smile about, the latest being her win at the Grammy’s on Sunday night. While celebrating this highly accomplished lady, we are reminded that 56-year old is a boss who continues to inspire.
The memoir traces Michelle Obama’s childhood experiences on the South Side of Chicago roots to her time in the White House and beyond.

Of her win, she stated –
Thank you to the Recording Academy for this honor! I had plenty of doubts about sharing so much of myself in Becoming, but this moment is another reminder that when we own the truth of who we are, we give ourselves the chance to connect with others in real, meaningful ways.”

Released in 2018, the written version of “Becoming” has sold over 11 million copies. Also, the book had the longest streak at #1 on Amazon for any book since “Fifty Shades of Grey” in 2012.

Michelle’s win marks the third Grammy for her household. Her husband Barack Obama, the former President of the United States, won the award for his audio book recordings of two of his books –
- Dreams of My Father in 2006 and
- The Audacity of Hope in 2008
Incidentally, Michelle isn’t the only former first lady to win a Grammy for best spoken word album. “Living History” won in 2003, a book written by Hillary Clinton, as reported by the Source.
Becoming Isn’t The First Book Written By Michelle Obama
Though you may not realize it, Becoming is not Michelle’s first book. Back in 2012, while she was still at the White House, she authored American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America. Aimed at promoting healthy eating and ending childhood obesity, her first book documents the White House Kitchen Garden she planted on the South Lawn of the White House in 2009. All proceeds were donated to the National Park Foundation.
