Actor Michael B Jordan has been in the news lately, mostly for his new relationship with Steve Harvey’s daughter, Lori.
Now we have something new to discuss involving Mr. Jordan.
Get ready for a new rum line. But wait…there’s controversy surrounding its debut already…
As reported by TMZ, The Source and other outlets, Michael B Jordan has been under fire lately for his choice in the naming of his new rum line.
Photos revealed by his girlfriend Lori’s social media page showed his upcoming drink at an apparent launch party, where the rum called “J’Ouvert” is seen.
Akin to Carnival, J’Ouvert is an overnight celebration of the emancipation of enslaved Africans in the Caribbean. It started in Trinidad and Tobago and began being celebrated across the Caribbean when other islands experienced emancipation.
Nicki Minaj Speaks Out
Well, those of Trinidadian roots called foul, including Nicki Minaj! Jordan was accused of cultural appropriation, exploitation, and outright insensitivity. Does MBJ even have any ties at all to the region? That’s unclear. However, Nicki Minaj, while defending him, put in her 2 cents.
“I’m sure MBJ didn’t intentionally do anything he thought Caribbean ppl would find offensive,”
“but now that you are aware, change the name & continue to flourish & prosper.” – Nicki Minaj
Though he was quiet initially, Jordan heard the noise and finally spoke out about it via his Instagram social media page, posting –
“I just wanna say on behalf of myself and my partners, our intention was never to offend or hurt a culture (we love & respect) & hoped to celebrate & shine a positive light on. Last Few Days has been a lot of listening. A lot of learning and engaging in countless community conversations…
We hear you. I hear you and want to be clear that we are in the process of renaming. We sincerely apologize & look forward to introducing a brand we can all be proud of.”
So, what’s the outcome of the new rum line, J’Ouvert?…the name is a-changin’.
